How a master key system actually works.

A master key system is a hierarchy of keys with different access levels — all working off the same underlying pinning scheme. Designed right, one key opens everything you need it to; nothing you don't. Designed wrong, you've got 47 keys on a ring and no idea which one does what.

GMK
Grand Master — opens every cylinder in the system. Held by 1–2 people.
MK
Master — opens one building, floor, or department. Held by managers.
CK
Change Key — opens one cylinder. The everyday key for individual offices or tenants.
Sub-Master
Optional layer between Master and Change Keys (e.g., janitorial across all floors).

The hierarchy, top to bottom

The Grand Master Key (GMK) operates every cylinder in the system. Below that, Master Keys (MK) operate logical groups — usually by building, floor, or department. Below those, Sub-Masters operate sub-groups within a master. At the bottom, Change Keys (CK) operate one cylinder each. Every key cylinder has master pins that let multiple keys operate it correctly.

Common use cases

Multi-floor offices with one building manager who needs total access plus floor-level masters for facilities. Retail spaces where the corporate office holds the GMK and each store manager holds a Change Key. Schools where principals hold a master, teachers hold floor-level keys, custodial holds a sub-master, and individual classrooms have change keys. Multi-tenant buildings where each tenant's own internal hierarchy is a sub-master, and the building manager holds the GMK.

Retrofitting your existing hardware vs new system

If your hardware is in good condition, we can usually rekey existing cylinders into a new hierarchy — no need to replace knobs, levers, or deadbolts. If your hardware is mixed (multiple manufacturers, multiple keyways), we'll either standardize on one keyway or design around what's there. We'll be honest about which makes more sense for your building.

Restricted keyways & security

For high-security properties we install restricted keyway cylinders. Keys can only be cut at registered locksmiths with documented authorization — they can't be copied at a hardware store or online. We keep an authorization list per system; you tell us who's allowed to request copies.

Who gets which level of key

We design the hierarchy with you before we cut anything. You decide who needs GMK access (usually 1-2 people), who needs MK access (department heads, facilities), who needs sub-master access (shift leads, IT for server rooms), and who gets a change key (everyone else). We document it; you keep the document.

Locked myself out of the office on a Sunday morning at Sierra Point. They picked up, were straightforward about timing, and got me back in without damaging the door. Will keep them on speed dial.

We had them set up a master key system across two floors of our office on the Genentech corridor. Thorough, professional, and the documentation they left us is exactly what facilities asked for.

Brand new house in Daly City. Wanted everything rekeyed and a smart lock installed on the front door. They walked me through options honestly — never pushed me into the most expensive thing.

Locked out? Here's what to do.

A few seconds of calm makes a real difference. Here's what works, what doesn't, and what to expect from us the moment you call.

  1. 01

    Don't force the lock.

Damaged locks cost more to replace than the lockout itself. Step away from the door — we'll handle it.

  2. 02

    Call us at (628) 250-3419.

Tell us your address and what's locked. We'll quote you on the phone — no surprises when we arrive.

  3. 03

    Get to a safe spot.

Car lockout in a parking lot or on the street? Stay near a well-lit area. A building lobby is fine too.

  4. 04

We'll roll out as soon as we can.

We'll confirm an ETA with you by call or text before we leave. No ghosting, no mystery wait.

Outside our listed hours? Call anyway — we respond to emergency calls outside hours when we can. We'll be honest about timing the moment you call.

Master Key Systems FAQ

Straight answers, no fine print.

Questions we get a lot for master key systems jobs. If yours isn't here, call — we'd rather have a quick conversation than guess wrong.

How secure is a master key system?
As secure as the worst-protected key in the chain. If a Grand Master is lost, the entire system is compromised. That's why we recommend restricted keyways, careful issuance, and documented authorization. We can also build systems with "selective" master keying that limits exposure.
What if a master key is lost?
If a Change Key is lost, we rekey the affected cylinder(s). If a Master is lost, we rekey every cylinder that key operated. If the Grand Master is lost, the entire system has to be rebuilt. That's why GMKs go to as few people as possible and live on dedicated, marked, signed-out fobs.
Can you build a system with restricted keyways?
Yes. We install Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, ASSA, and other restricted keyway systems where keys can only be cut by authorized locksmiths. You maintain the authorization list; we verify before cutting any additional keys.
How long does a master key system take to design and install?
Design (site walk, hierarchy sketch, cylinder count): 1-2 days for a typical mid-size office. Installation: a single full day for most spaces; multiple days for larger buildings or phased installs. We schedule around your operating hours so we don't disrupt the business.
Can you take over an existing master key system?
Yes — and it's a common request. We start by pinning a sample cylinder to confirm the keyway, document the current hierarchy, and decide with you whether to extend it or rekey to a fresh one for a clean break. Sometimes a clean break is the right call (when previous documentation is gone).
What's the difference between master keying and keyed-alike?
Keyed-alike means multiple cylinders all use the same single key — common for residential (front door + back door + garage entry, same key). Master keying means multiple cylinders use different keys for daily use, but a master key opens all of them. Different problem, different tool.
Do you do this for landlords or just commercial?
Both. Landlords with multi-unit buildings often want a system where they hold a master that opens every unit, while each tenant has a change key for their own door. We design those exactly like a small commercial system.
Will you document the system for us?
Yes, always. You get a hierarchy diagram, a cylinder schedule (every cylinder labeled by location with its key code), and an authorization list. Your facilities team or property manager can hand it off to a successor without confusion.
